Pharmacists have a “corresponding responsibility” to ensure that the controlled substance prescriptions they fill are issued for legitimate medical purpose. Pharmacists who ignore red flags that may indicate the prescriptions they fill are not valid put patient health at risk but also subject themselves, their licenses and their pharmacies to enforcement action. Pharmacists must understand their “corresponding responsibility” by identifying and resolving prescribing red flags before filling prescriptions. They can find themselves on the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (“DEA’s”) radar for failing to resolve red flags and subject their pharmacy to an on-site inspection. Attend this session to learn how to identify and resolve red flags and how to prepare for DEA inspections and manage them should they occur.

Recognize potential consequences for failing to fulfill a pharmacists' corresponding responsibility.
Discuss how to prepare for and manage targeted or random DEA inspections.
Describe the scope of DEA inspection authority and possible administrative, civil and criminal enforcement actions should there be a lack of compliance.
