Optimizing Continuous Glucose Monitoring: The Evolving Landscape of Diabetes Care

CGMs represent an important technological advancement in the monitoring of diabetes, but the potential benefits of CGMs require that patients are educated and trained on using the devices correctly. It is critical that retail and community pharmacists, who play an integral role in helping patients managing diabetes, are up to date and educated on the innovative ways in which continuous glucose monitoring is improving outcomes for patients with diabetes.

Pharmacist Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be better able to:

  1. Describe the role of monitoring blood glucose and its implications on clinical outcomes in people with diabetes.
  2. Enhance patient empowerment by actively participating in dialogue with the patient about monitoring their blood glucose and the role of rtCGM in improving outcomes.
  3. Explain the clinical evidence and impact of rtCGM on diabetes outcomes
  4. Interpret the data from rtCGM, including the ambulatory glucose profile and the trends in glucose levels depicted by real time arrows.
  5. Design appropriate interventions for patients with diabetes using rtCGM regarding troubleshooting, clinical interventions, and application of available settings to enhance the use of their rtCGM.
