Demystifying Opiate Addiction Treatment


Combatting the opiate epidemic won’t be easy, but medication-assisted treatment (MAT) will help. This presentation will demystify the regulatory challenges of MAT, with an emphasis on the use of buprenorphine to help patients return to productive lives.

Pharmacist Learning Objectives

At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the mechanisms underlying medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opiate addiction.
  2. Discuss effective strategies in addressing dispensing challenges posed to pharmacies by buprenorphine.
  3. Identify MAT compliance requirements imposed by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, including patient number limits, recordkeeping, and inspections relating to buprenorphine.
  4. Discuss the unique privacy concerns of patients in addiction treatment.
