Bloodborne Pathogens: OSHA Training for Compliance and Protection

Description

Pharmacists who provide services such as immunizations, point-of-care testing, and specimen analysis must protect their patients—and themselves—from bloodborne pathogens. Learn how to recognize bloodborne pathogen hazards, reduce exposure risk, respond properly to exposure, and comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. This session meets OSHA training requirements.

Pharmacist Learning Objectives

At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify potential bloodborne pathogens and their modes of transmission.
  2. Explain the requirements for pharmacists to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.
  3. Describe engineering and work practice controls that can help minimize exposure risks.
  4. List the hepatitis B vaccination requirements for health care workers.
  5. Outline the proper postexposure response to a bloodborne pathogen exposure.
