Federal Pharmacy Forum: Patient Access: The New Paradigm for Advancing Clinical Pharmacy Services

Description

This session will highlight the increasing importance of healthcare access in advancing and expanding clinical pharmacy services. Clinical Pharmacy has a long history of focusing on quality, cost effectiveness, formulary management and compliance as its basis for expanding practices. Although much of that is still relevant, there has been a significant change in focus in healthcare at large with an increasing recognition that in order to deliver quality care you must first start with strong access to healthcare services. With significant primary care and specialty care provider shortages, an aging and expanding baby boomer population, and more complex medication regimens, there are significant opportunities for the pharmacy profession to position itself as one that can be a force multiplier and significantly improve patient care access. This program will attempt to frame the opportunity and share strategies that can be employed to take advantage of this new paradigm.

Pharmacist Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, both pharmacists and technicians will be able to:

1. Review the past non-access strategies that have been effective in expanding clinical pharmacy practices.

2. Identify the demographic and market changes that are leading to access problems and how that relates to the opportunity for clinical pharmacy practice expansion.

3. Discuss access definitions, research, success stories and strategies that are increasingly being used to justify expanded clinical pharmacy practices in the new marketplace.
