Beyond the Acronym: Motivational Interviewing for Maximum Patient Adherence

Description

Forget the old acronym systems—if you haven’t already—and explore new approaches to motivational interviewing (MI). This evidence-based session will help pharmacists decide which MI skills to use in real time to improve adherence and create lasting health behavior change. Discover different approaches, including empathy and reflections, open-ended questions, sharing information and education, assessing patient understanding, and summarizing a plan for change, and learn which approaches work best for patients who are ambivalent or resistant to change.

Pharmacist Learning Objectives

At the completion of this application-based activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply motivational interviewing (MI) skills for improving adherence to health behaviors.
  2. Distinguish the appropriateness and effectiveness of various MI skills.
  3. Critically evaluate case examples and respond with appropriate MI skills and solutions.
